INEQUALITIES AND TOURISM CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOUR: A MIXTURE MODEL ANALYSIS

2015

The criticism of income as a measure of well-being and trends in living standards is well known and recently scholars have been involved in defining measures to better assess material well-being and differences in living standards. Recent evidence shows that individuals improve their well-being significantly if they are able to spend on higher-order goods and services like tourism and leisure activities. In the light of that, our study proposes to explore differences in living standards in Italy by analysing the distribution of tourism expenditure. For this aim, Mixtures of Regression Models were used in order to investigate whether there is an unobserved heterogeneity in tourism consumptio…

Pnnr e le economie del turismo in Italia: disparità inter ed infra regionali e politiche di ripresa e resilienza

2022

The Italian regions show marked differences in the pattern of tourism development. These disparities can be offset by implementing a common plan supporting recovery and strengthening its resilience to external shocks. This article aims to offer a deepening of the NRPV concerning the economies of tourism and, following a regional analysis, to verify the current disparities and the initiatives of the plan to overcome them. An analysis of the Italian regions on the supply and demand front is proposed using synthetic indices of endowment and the presence of tourist demand to compare the articulation of specificities at the sub-regional level. Finally, some guidelines are suggested on policies f…

The “Sun and Beach” tourism destination image: An application to the case of Cuba from the Spanish tourist‐origin market

2004

The research steam on tourism destination image, begun in the late 1960s, has been essentially operational in its approach, and only occasionally strategic. Aspects relating to the image of tourism destinations still constitute a relatively unexplored line of research. This paper, first establishes specific conceptual and methodological approaches, to enable us to rigorously study and evaluate the image of what we understand as a tourism destination characterized by “sun and beach”. It then applies this methodological proposition to a number of destinations in the Caribbean, focusing on the case of Cuba from an important tourist‐origin market for this destination, Spain.

Seasonality in tourism: a critical review of its main measures

2008

The purpose of this study is to estimate the risk of second primary cancer (SPC) in 129 consecutive patients with splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) diagnosed in three Italian haematological centres. The person-years method deriving as a sum ofproducts ofage- and sex- specific rates and ofthe corresponding time at risk was used. The SPC Standardized Incidence Ratio ISIR) was 2.03 with a 95% confidence interval: [1.05,3.56] (p < 0.05) and the corresponding Absolute Excess Risk (AER) was 145.8 (per 10000 SMZL patients per year). Our findings evidence a high frequency of additional cancers in patients with SMZL and suggest that the incidence rate of SPCs is significantly different from that…

Tourism statistics: methodological imperatives and difficulties: the case of residential tourism in island communities

2008

Tourism statistics are one of the key sources of information for economists, public officials and tourism decision-makers. The aim of the present paper is to describe and critique the methodological difficulties encountered when approaching statistical studies in tourism. The case of hidden tourism in island communities is used to illustrate that in tourism statistics there exists a lack of clarity and convention concerning definitions, procedures, measurement and analytic approaches. The conclusions and the study implications should help tourism authorities and tourism statisticians to better define and standardise methodological and measurement approaches and practices and to more effecti…

Tourism Statistics

2017

How a nation collects and shares data on tourism in the country is influenced by that country’s historical, cultural, and political background, as well as its geographical characteristics. This means there are a wide variety of ways tourism data are collected, evaluated, and disseminated. Although standard statistical mechanisms for tracking tourism have been improved, to be of greatest use, statistical sources should be further enhanced and be comparable across locations and time. For this reason, several international organizations have the responsibility of harmonizing definitions of, and methodologies for, collecting data. These organizations are also a relevant supplier of data sources…

I Piani Strategici per il Turismo

2022

From many points of view, the 30-year period from 1990 to 2020 was a period of great change that led, as a consequence, to a continuous reshaping of public policies for the tourism sector and related industries. The Tourism Startegic Plan for Italy, is based on a great heritage of ideas and proposals, elaborated with a process of wide sharing, which has not exhausted its function with approval but will continue after the Covid and in the years to come. The Plan, in fact, was conceived as a constantly evolving "living" organism. Moreover, it adopts a strategic vision that, starting from the full awareness of the opportunities of the tourist development of our country, identifies four objectiv…

Walking tourism in urban destinations: some preliminary results from a survey in Malaga with gps-based technologies

2018

Walking tourism in urban destinations can be defined as a sequence of day visits and/or a sequence of walking tours. In this work, GPS tracking data on spatio-temporal behaviour of walking tourists in Malaga are reported as case study. Malaga is a booming tourist destination characterized by a city centre, particularly suitable for a pedestrian visit. From 22nd January to 19th March 2018 for a total period of 41 days, a survey was carried out with a specific protocol: 103 interviews were conducted and 101 GPS valid tracks were collected. Walking tourists were systematically sampled, starting from the population of all tourists staying in the surveying day at some selected hotels in the city…

Residents' attitude as determinant of tourism sustainability: The case of Trujillo

2018

Abstract This research aims to gain knowledge to understand residents' attitudes towards tourism sustainability in a destination where the main attraction is an archaeological site by analysing the effects of residents' support and perceived benefits for tourism sustainability (in economic, market and social terms). The relationships between perceived benefits and residents' support and among local involvement, attachment and perceived benefits were also examined. The proposed model was assessed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) regression. The data analysis showed that perceived benefits have a more significant effect on tourism sustainability than on …
